What a weekend. Flew to LA for my college roommate, Sarah's wedding. It's been 6 years since the last time I saw anyone in LA. I stayed with Florence for the weekend and had a good catch up with her. It was weird seeing her as a teacher. She always seems to be free spirited type, not the traditional teacher type. But I could tell that she enjoys it and her students seem to as well. It's so weird seeing college roommates/friends to be grown up and working real jobs. I guess I'm still in the student mentality, sort of as residency is a job but still learning.
Anyways, the wedding was beautiful, on the smaller side but very much Sarah's taste. I got to catch up with my old small groups and with few other GOCers. It was nice. It was what I expected with it being at Grace Church, doesn't run too late, no dance floor and nothing too crazy. But it was done to the true expectations of wedding vows as it should be between bride and grooms and God with friends and family as witness, not some huge celebration or reason for big parties.

Home for the holiday/wedding
I finally got to go home to Cali and it has been over a year. The last time was right after graduation. The vacation started off with going to my cousin's wedding. It was a beautiful wedding, fairly extravagant with all the work and pomp, but at the same time very homey cuz they had people from church help them. The reception was very elaborate as well.
Rhys & Flora Wedding
Had a good time. But for my own wedding, I'm more for something smaller and simpler. This is just too much work, even for me attending it. But nonetheless, it was beautiful and elegant.
The rest of my time was spent at home, just enjoying my parents and my goofy brother.

Last vacay home for the year...
Spent three weeks ... I think it's the longest that I have spent home since I've left for college back in 2002. It was great ... a last vacay of just bumming around before the crazy residency starts in Cleveland.
I really miss the time with my parents and made realize that they already have their own schedule to their lives and are quite happy. I spent lots of time eating out with my mom and eating my mom's homemade food. It was great time to just be able to chat with my parents the "adult" topics that I never really cared even a couple months ago.
It finally hit me that being away from home for so long that I don't really my parents' home as my home any more. I still say I'm original from Cali cause I just can't shake off my Cali style but I tend to say I'm from wherever that I have been living before. Now, I'll say that I'm from Jersey. My parents' place now has become one of my vacation place where I can just lounge and not obligated to do anything beside visiting my family. I even feel like I'm a visitor at the church that I grew up in. I guess this is part of growing up and becoming an adult and moving so far away from home.
I don't know when I'll be moving back to Cali but I have a feeling that it'll be awhile.

My brother's graduation ...
One long crazy weekend ...
Sat ... early morning drive for the long awaited haircut with my fav hair dresser. Hair feels much lighter and much easier to deal with. Then photo session with my parents. I don't like to be in photos and my mom is determined to get some good shots in with my brother so she can send to them and to keep them on her phone ... sigh. Surprisingly, we did get some good ones. Then onto our usual family game night, except this time around it's Monopoly and MahJong. Before it used to Big 2 card game... my family goes through phases.
Sun .. graduation ceremony and pictures galore. We took pics prior to the ceremony with my dad's side of family. Way too many pictures and I'm the silly girl with the green hood in the midst of lavendar hood for dentistry. Oh well. The ceremony was over 2 hours and I was so bored ... then dinner at a fancy Chinese restaurant where the food is more for the adults and the younger gen was wondering what half the food was. One of the dish is the fish's stomach ... interesting and ech... Then onto our usual family game nights ... oh the crazy fun ...
Monday ... finally finshed with packing up my brother's room ... This was the 3rd trip out to bring his things back home. Imgaine how much things he had as a single guy. I swear, he has more than I do and I have an entire apt with furniture and what not. We moved everything back home and his stuff filled up my room, his room and what used to be the study. Amazing how my brother has pretty turned the house into his storage until he finds a job and move out. I'm just waiting for the phone calls from my mom when she can't stand up any more and need to vent... haha

Post Grad Party
Went to Vegas day after graduation for a couple of days. It's really the first time as a legal adult for me. Went with a couple of the girls and their boyfriend/fiance. Had a wonderful time partying it up and getting the Vegas feel. It's been a great self esteem booster at XS (club we went) and at Carnival Bar, which we randomly stop by. Alcohol definitely seems like free floating since we all pretty much drank more than usual. Definitely some stories are remained to be stories among us girls and will remain in Vegas. The last party before work, work, work.

Uganda
I am excited. Can't wait ... Thurs I'll be embarking on my trip to Uganda doing my last medical school rotation. After that, when I come back, I'll be waiting for my degree and be officially a doctor. No more playing doctor. Wonder what my next adventure will hold.
My adventure in Uganda will on the following blog as it is part of the organization that I'm doing my international rotation with. I don't think I'll try double blogging. Too lazy. Hopefully I won't get into something way over my head. I'll update as much as I can when I'm there, but definitely when I'm back.
INMED Blog - Uganda
I'm glad that I have finally found an apartment in Cleveland, OH before I leave. That's one less thing for me to fuss and cram/stress about when I come back. Now I just have to wait for the final word at my apt complex.

JFK
Saturday, Wei and I went to JFK museum in Dallas, basically to see the history of JFK's assasination. The museum was full of the his life and family stories and his political career up to his assasination and the aftermath. I felt that the museum did a really good job in transforming the building where the shots were fired into a walk through history showing what happened at the time and how the case was pieced together by the technology of the time.
I thought it was interesting in how the city preserved the "X" that marks the spot where JFK was shot. The city paints it every year to keep it visible from the 6th floor of the museum. Then the museum keeps the same box arrangement where the assasin was. It really give the sense of you being there and being able to piece together yourself what happened.
The aftermath was also talked about as well. I don't remember much but what sticks out was the fact that not only the people loved and mourned JFK but even the politics afterwards were still following what he dreamt of. It was just amazing to me that a president was so loved that he made an incredible impact during his interrupted reign.
It was through the museum that I get know some history of Parkland Memorial Hospital, place where I'm rotating through. I'm glad that I visited the museum, now I can put a place in mind regarding this incredibly sad history of US.

Jorg's Vienna Cafe & Dallas
First week in UTSW Anesthesia -- complete.
Anyways, I'm staying with my cousin Wei in Plano, TX about 25min from Dallas. Plano is an old and new suburban city. Wei lives near the old downtown area. The Vienna Cafe was spotted on my way home and Wei also saw it too. So we decided to try it and see. I have never had any Austrian / German food so this is a first for me. For Wei, this is to compare to what he had when was living in Germany.
The food was ok to me since I didn't realize that Austrian food mostly consist of "wurst" (sausage), suaerkraut, and cold potato salad. The sausage part wasn't bad, it's just a little too much meat for me. The sauerkraut is good. The interesting part is the potato salad. It's not a salad where there's potato chunks, it's more like mashed potatoes but with dressing. All I can say is interesting. Wei said that it's actually very close, but not as good as the real thing. This is a maybe try again category.
Dallas in general is hot. I'm not used to the 100's degree since I have left Sacramento more than 7 yrs ago. I'm still trying to get use to the heat. Anyways, the rotation is set up like radiology rotation where it starts early but ends by noon after the lecture. People interested in Anesthesia stay later. We rotate through 2 hospitals, Parkland Memorial and Zale University. The residents rotate through 5 hospitals throughout Dallas as UTSW is the only anesthesia program in Dallas. So far, it seems like there's pretty good system set up where the residents do their own learning on the own time and there are short reading for each day to trigger more in-depth discussion with the attendings. The attendings are very willing to teach. There's definitely heavy case loads but there seems to relief from the CRNA around 3-4pm unless there are just too many cases going on. Calls seem to be Q4d. So far so good.

After Boards Vacay
After all the boards, I flew home to enjoy some family time and SF before going off for my away rotations for the next 4 months. I spent a couple of days at my brother's place in SF and we went to a couple of good Chinese restaurants that my mom found and want to go as family.
We went to this awesome and expensive dim sum place in Daly City. They also sold Dragon's Beard. It's a candy but made it like tons of white threads woven together. Yummy
This was my makeup birthday cake. My brother bought this from a place that he deemed really good. It was yummy too.

Week in Weston, Florida
Back from a week in Florida during a hurricane season with a girlfriend. The week was muggy, warm / hot and wet. It literally rain for a couple of hours 3 days out of the 7 days we were there. The place we stayed, Mizner Place in Vacation Village. The place was gorgeous. We mostly sat around the pool and got sun and read random fiction. very chilled. We gone a yummy Italian restaurant not once but twice. The first time we got their appetizer caprese and it was yummy. The second time we got dessert instead, Italian canoli and Tiramisu. oh boy were they yummy beyond description.
We also went to one of the sports cafe and the bad for you fried seafood. Tried conch fritters which I'm sure I've had before but it was in Chinese soup that my mom made. We also tried one of the one of the more upscale restaurant for their yummy fresh fish. I had the seared halibut. It was done to perfection. We went to one very popular Asian buffet. It was only $11 and they've got sushi and hot foods and green tea ice cream. We have definitely had our share of unbelievable yummy food.
We spent half a day in the famous Everglades. We took the tour of the Everglades via an airboat, like the ones on CSI Miami. Saw bunch of crazy native birds ie vultures. Saw 2 alligators in the swamp. Then we got the alligator show and took pictures of me holding a baby alligator (Liana).

First week in New Jersey
The drive to Jersey from Missouri took forever. With all the breaks, it took me 15 hrs or so to get to Harrisburg then another 2.5 hrs to my apartment. It just felt like forever. I don't think I would ever want to do it again. It was cramp driving and not much leg room. Ugh.
Then we sort of unpack a bit then me and my parents took a tour of East Coast for 5 days. It is my second time but their first. It was still fun but my favorite this time is Niagara Falls and the Bostonian atmosphere. Perhaps I might spend some time in my fourth year there. Who knows.

Capitol Hill, White House, Washington D.C.

Hershey's Chocolate World

Niagara Falls

Bostonian Lobster (yummy)

Will be going to Florida to enjoy the sun next week. Be a fun boring bum.

Crazy Week ....
This started with me agreeing to come back home to volunteer as the Arts & Crafts translator for Sacramento's Chinese Culture Camp. I was scheduled to fly back on Tues and land at 11am and immediately get myself to the camp and start my work. My flight leaves from Kansas City at 7:30am and it's a 3 hr drive from Kirksville. So I left my apt at 2:30am and got to the airport around 6:30am with a 1/2 hr nap and 15 min detour on the airport exit. At the same time, I got a cold which started 2 days before. My nose was so stuffed that I couldn't sleep before my drive. All in all, I was up for 36hrs when I got back from the first day of "work".
Work was fun. Translating what the teacher from Taiwan was teaching and at the same time teaching the kids the Chinese Arts & Crafts. After the day is done, my mom and a couple of her friends were in charge taking the 3 Taiwan teachers out to dinner and sometimes after dinner program. This was from Tues to Fri.
For the after dinner programs, we have gone to Tapioca Express for Shaved Ice. We walked around Old Sac and the Delta Boat and the walkway along the Sacramento River. After that we went to Leatherby's Creamery for their gigantic banana split and sundae. The next night we took a walk along another small river in a residential neighborhood. The highlight of all those were the conversations. The conversations were non stop and full of laughter.
Then on Sat, my family and I drove to SF for my brother's white coat ceremony at his dental school. They don't have a different white coat for students. Their coats are the same length as the fully licensed docs, unlike mine. Then we spent the weekend hanging out with my brother at his apartment and had some yummy food. We spent some time playing card games and did some grocery shopping in Chinatown. We at Thai food, Taiwanese food and Korean food. All in all, it was great to be able to hang out together as a family. It's been a while since we were able to do that.

Awesome Quarter
This past quarter or the past 4 weeks have been awesome. We've got some interesting first years on campus and are just reminding us how much we've done over the last year. It's only their 1st week of school and they are already freaking out over their first test in a week and a half. Yep. That was us last year. It's just amazing how time flies and how much we've changed over the year.
Another thing, I got my first A in my Pathology I class. It was even better with missing only one question on the final. The class only has one test and we were all panicking over it and I was so stressed that I didn't even know what I was studying. On top of that, I even got myself into a study group with all guys. I usually study by myself too. Craziness. But grades wise, God has been watching over me. I had no motivation to study at all but somehow, God provide enough motivation for me to study and get the awesome grades that I've got.
Now I get a week off and I plan on vegetating and do fun things. I'm going shopping, clean up my apt, and maybe some cooking to freeze for the upcoming crazy quarter. I'm sooo excited, going to NYC to see Tiff Keng, see Les Mis then some more shopping and sight seeing. Fun times coming up.

Summer .... OOO ..... Summer ....
I guess I'm now into monthly updates. But anyway, summer is too nice for school despite the Missouri's misery sweltering heat. I basically didn't want to study the past 3 weeks that we were in school, but now, we are coming up to our finals week. How fast the time past. God has definitely been great to me because even though I don't have much motivation to study, He's been guiding me to study and granting me really great scores. Scores that I know that I normally would never get. But anyways, school is same ole same ole, boring.
I got more exciting news about school but not schoolwork. I don't know if I ever told y'all about being secretary for CMDA and that our class CMDA is low on regular attenders for weekly Bible Study, therefore we didn't have a worship leader for the upcoming year back in May. We've been praying for a worship leader, more men for a men's group and more people from our class will come. We've definitely been praying for the newbies (1st years). God has anwered one prayer already and the 1st years haven't officially started class yet. One of girls that we've met led before and is more than willing to do so for Bible Study. God is awesome and He provides. The men's group is looking up because we do have a couple more men from the 1st year class joining us and a few more from our class that are interested in haing a men's group. So exciting :-) I can't wait for the year to unfold.
This last couple of days I've been busy studying, working on club stuff and figuring out rotation sites and boards review stuff. I can't wait for the year to start. There so many new and amazing things waiting to happen.
Can't wait ... going to NYC over Labor Day weekend and to see Tiff Keng. Yahooo!!!! Going to see Les Miz too. Haven't seen a NYC broadway since 2002. :-)

Officially 2nd year of Med school
Whooppeee!!! one year down and only God knows how many more to go. hehe. Anyways, the classes have been very interesting. It's more clinical based than before. Last year was all those boring science basics. Now we actually get to see everything in clinical cases. That's really cool. Even neurology sounds really good.
The last two weeks I was in Southwest Missouri following a doc. The area is really pretty. There was a national park with a huge lake that runs between Missouri and part of Arkansas. The really interesting part is that it takes a 45 min drive into the clinic that I worked and then the closest grocery market is 10 mi away into Arkansas. The closest town is smaller than the one that I'm in now.
The time I was there, I was able to see a lot, esp non compliant diabetics and prenatal care. The babies and prenatal care was more fun and more interesting to see. I also got to see colonoscopy, colposcopy, and EGD. Definitely was interesting, but I won't be doing Family Practice at all. It's too much work.
Now it's time for another crazy short summer quarter for the next 4 wks.

Updates
Wow! It's been 2 months since my last update and a whole quarter of med school has flown by. So now, officially, I'm done with my first year of med school. 1 down 1 more academic year to go. Yipppee!!!
Let's see.... May has been sort of the normal school month for me. Not much is new except all those tests are just part of normal life. I did get a week off after Memorial Day weekend where I saw Pirates, celebrated end of the year and did some major shopping. Pirates was awesome. Some said it wasn't that great but nontheless, I loved it. Can't wait for Harry Potter in July.
On the last Sunday that I was at school, I finally went to a church that I liked but then the pastor is leaving. My luck right? to find a church that I sorta like but don't if I'll like it when I come back in July. Please pray for that.
For June, I sepnt about 17 days at a 4H summer camp near St. Louis as a Health Aide/Nurse. Boy was there plenty of drama within all the camp directors and the staff. Let's just say people will do anything to keep their job the way it is and to make it more beneficial to them. But for me, it was also 17 days without any internet communication for me. How sad!
I did get a day off, so I drove up to Hannibal, MO. For those who are literature fanatics, it's where Mark Twain grew up and where he based his stories on. The place is really quaint and it set aside several areas just for Twain's display. There were also few stories about the down. My fav is the Lover's Leap Bluff where the Native Amer. girl's father disapproved of her choice in her mate and decided to kill them both. But both the girl and the mate jump the bluff and onto the train underneath and rode into Iowa and opened a general store. Very cute. And yes, I did go on a riverboat on the Mississippi River on Missouri and Illinois sides. The captain pointed out the Jackson Island. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera on me, so I'll have plan a second trip and include cave exploring as well.
Now, I'm home for a week. Just to hang out and help my silly little brother move to S.F. for dental school. His apt is really small even in comparison to the ones in LA and boy are they expensive. But I love the area. I will most definitely work my hardest to settle in the bay area eventually. I just can't get away from Cali and the FOBbiness. haha
I'll be going to Newark, NJ and Detroit, MI next week to visit some hospitals that I might plan on going for 3rd and 4th years. I just need to rank them and make sure that I'll be willing to spend those 2 years in those places.
I'm also planning a trip to East Lansing, MI at MSU for a conference in July. So that'll be interesting. Maybe a trip in Aug to LA too.
New goals: Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, medical mission trip

Lazy week
For the past week, I've been lazy by the med school standard. I haven't done much studying but did more fun things in planning. We've just had a skit nite and it's a tradition in med schools. It was hilarious. The whole nite was making fun of the things that happened during the school year, the professors and the students. Also they made pseudo commercials that mock the real TV ones, like Guardicil one less, Yaz and the Herpes one. I helped planned the refreshment stand as it was sponsored by the Bible Study as part of a fundraiser. It was a lot of fun trying to coordinate everything and everyone and planning food for about 400 people.
This week we found out that we need to have a social next week for the 3rd years that are coming back from their rotations to do their end of the year testing. So we are now in the midst of scrambling and combining this event with another end of the year event because something else came up. AHHH!!! But it'll be fun. :P
After all this, I'll get to go to St. Louis for a day for a conference and hang out at a friend's place the nite before. Hopefully, we'll do something fun that nite.
I've been going to church but haven't really had time to really get to know the people there. Most of the people really just go then leave after. We'll see. But I did pick up a book called Lady in Waiting by Jackie Kendall & Debby Jones. It sounded like a single gal book but it really talks about a gal's heart in preparations for God because Christ is our groom. Gals should have this in the heart before considering dating. It's just something fun for me to read so I don't go crazy.
I've just got the job for a 4H camp just outside of St. Louis for the 1st 2 wks of June then I'll be home for maybe 2 wks. Maybe I'll check out the rotation sites for my 3rd & 4th years for the 1st wk of July. But we'll see. It's still up in the air.
Anyways, it's getting late here and it's time for bed. So good nite peeps.
